The man behind ACT
Dr. Russ Harris is a physician, psychotherapist, and one of the world's most respected ACT trainers. The author of the international bestseller The Happiness Trap, translated into over 30 languages, he has trained more than 90,000 mental health professionals worldwide.
His unique approach combines scientific rigour with practical accessibility, making complex ACT concepts immediately applicable in clinical settings.
The Hexaflex model
The Hexaflex model presents six interconnected processes that form the core clinical levers of ACT. Together, they promote psychological flexibility: the ability to make space for difficult experiences while committing to actions guided by personal values.
Present-moment awareness
Being fully aware of and engaged in the here and now, rather than being caught up in thoughts about the past or the future.
Acceptance
Opening up to difficult thoughts and emotions without struggling with them, thereby freeing up energy for effective action.
Cognitive defusion
Observing thoughts as mental events rather than absolute truths, thereby reducing their influence.
Self-as-context
Developing a transcendent perspective, the "observing self," that can hold and make space for all experiences.
Values
Clarifying what truly matters in life and using those values as a compass to guide action.
Committed action
Taking action in line with one's values, even in the presence of difficult thoughts and emotions.
